Portugal

Portugal offers a layered experience shaped by maritime history, deep-rooted traditions, and a coastline that stretches for nearly 1,800 kilometers. In Lisbon, the streets of Alfama wind uphill toward São Jorge Castle, where views of red-tiled rooftops and the Tagus River reveal how the city was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Trams still clatter through narrow streets, and fado music, often performed in candlelit taverns, tells stories of longing and the sea. The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém stands as a legacy of the country’s Age of Discovery, funded by the spice trade and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Outside the capital, Portugal's diversity becomes more evident. In the north, Porto's riverside district, Ribeira, showcases buildings clad in colorful ceramic tiles known as azulejos that often tell entire stories through their artwork. Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia offer tastings just across the Douro River, where centuries-old methods are still used to age the region's most famous export. Further inland, the Douro Valley’s terraced vineyards present a dramatic landscape shaped by both nature and generations of winemaking tradition.

The Algarve, in southern Portugal, draws visitors to its limestone cliffs, sea caves, and golden beaches. Yet beyond the postcard views, towns like Lagos and Tavira offer quiet plazas, fresh seafood markets, and whitewashed homes influenced by centuries of Moorish presence. Inland, cork oak forests cover the Alentejo region and small towns like Évora preserve Roman ruins alongside Gothic cathedrals. Archaeological sites such as the Cromeleque dos Almendres, a megalithic stone circle older than Stonehenge, reveal just how long people have lived in these lands.
